Back to the drawing board: When history leads to new visions
The OTE Building Design Archive is in itself a rare structured collection of designs, most of which are architectural, but with some engineering and structural designs as well.
It is a rare archival collection of historic importance, including, as it does, designs of major architects and engineers for landmark buildings in Greece, innovative structures for their time, which both hosted and were influenced by the dynamic and colour bestowed by use, day-to-day life, people who – whether as architects or users – shaped each given space.
Presented in this book is a representative sample of designs from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, taking the reader on a journey through forms and movements, including modernism and post-modernism as well as classical and traditional modes.
Rare photographs of building elevations at the time of their construction and during their years of bustling use give an overview and experience of an archive that has shape, life, art, talent and a great deal of passion from all the people who created it, maintained it, and studied it to make it available here to everyone, digitally, for all time.
