Architect, Designer, Curator

Vassiliki-Maria Plavou is an architect who operates in three intersecting disciplines: architecture, design and curating. She brings together multi-disciplinary knowledge and experts to shape clients’ visions into idiosyncratic interiors, strong identities and elaborate objects. Vassiliki-Maria Plavou designs and consults for the everyday spaces. She has worked with cultural and commercial clients who value the power of design. She selects and amplifies the unique elements of her clients’ values and creates timeless, dynamic material snapshots of their visions.

Architecture

Vassiliki-Maria Plavou holds a Graduate Degree Diploma in Architecture from the School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a Postgraduate Studies Degree in Architectural Design from the Department of Architecture, University of Thessaly, Volos.

She has worked as the Managing Director for the sole distributor of Vitra in Greece (2017-2023). She initially joined the brand in 2016 as Sales Manager, and eventually undertook overseeing strategic operations, sales, and curatorial direction of promotional events.

She has designed the exhibition of Tassos Vrettos. Wo(rth)ship. exhibition, Benaki Museum - Pireaus Building, Athens, 2015 and Hell As Pavilion exhibition, Centre d’Art Contemporain, Palais De Tokyo, Paris, 2013.

Vassiliki-Maria’s published works reflect her interdisciplinary approach to design, architecture, and curatorial practices. Her writings have been published in Mas Context Magazine and Kerb Journal offering insight into contemporary issues as new materialism, gendered geographies, territorial explorations in architecture and culture. Her work has been featured in Mousse Magazine.

In teaching, Vassiliki-Maria has served as Elias Zenghelis teaching assistant (2013-2014) in Architectural Design Course, Postgraduate Studies Program, School of Architecture, UTH. She has also led educational workshops, among them a 3D printing program for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, 2014-2015, in collaboration with Fotis Sagonas.

Design

In 2019, she co-founded the graphic design atelier Studio Precarity with Marios Stamatis. Together, they created notable works, from the visual identity of the Syros International Film Festival (SIFF) (2018–2023) to research and editorial projects like Encountering the Unexpected – OTE Building Design & Archive, designed for the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE). In 2024, they designed the visual identity for Greece’s participation in the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia for Xiromero/Dryland.

Their projects include the visual identity of KRAMA festival (2024), Tassos Vrettos. The Forest’s Riddle exhibition (2022), and the edition of The School of Infinite Rehearsals, Movement IV – While We’re Together (2022, Onassis Foundation).

Before this, Vassiliki-Maria Plavou designed the visual identity and catalogue for Greece at the 56th Venice Biennale(2015) for Maria Papadimitriou’s Why Look at Animals? Agrimikà. Additional projects include Aigaleo City (NEON, 2016), George Lappas – Happy Birthday (Deste, 2016), and DESTE Prize 2015 (Museum of Cycladic Art).

Individually and collectively, they have received the Young Book Designer’s Award and multiple distinctions at the Hellenic Graphic Design and Illustration Awards (EBGE).

Curating

Vassiliki-Maria’s latest curatorial projects include Fotis Sagonas’ solo exhibition Into the Mass at Donopoulos Gallery in Thessaloniki, 2023 and Volcanic Identity; States of Eros featuring Iria Vrettou in Athens, 2023. She has also curated the solo projects Anthology of Cracks, aperformative piece created by Christos Delidimos, presented at the Ksylapothiki Building - Ephorate of Antiquities of Piraeus and Islands, Athens, 2020 (and at the Point Centre for Contemporary Art, Nicosia, 2018), as well as artist’s Marios Stamatis’ Genesis21 <3 performance presented as part of Rooms 2019 exhibition organised by Kappatos Gallery and hosted at the Hotel St. George Lycabettus, Athens, 2019.

She has also curated group shows such as Degustation Menu for Carnivorous Plants exhibition, at Rizom, Athens, 2022, Please Please Me exhibition supported by NEON organization, hosted at the Amfissa Former Hospital, Amfissa, 2020, Cra(u)sh. Or how you made me kiss the pavement, Grace, Athens, 2020.

She has also worked at the curatorial team of Outcast Europe; Memories of people and displacement, Hotel Bageion, Athens, 2018, GR80S – Greece in the Eighties at Technopolis exhibition, Τechnopolis - City of Athens, Athens, 2016, Decorbuziers exhibition, Romantso Cultural Centre, Athens, 2015, Tassos Vrettos.
